Last November I set myself a project: to photograph what New York City sounds like.
This is the first finished result of those efforts.
The video above is mainly a vehicle for the sound track, and simply consists of the four photos below, which you can click to see larger.
The images and audio were created the same way: recorded over time with movement, and then composited and layered from the original source. The subway is a harsh place of sudden noise, bright lights and deep shadows, idle tedium broken by the crush of movement. Isolating and connecting, hostile yet vital, it's impossible to separate the experience of the subway from the city that it runs beneath.
