About Matthew

Matthew is a photographer and writer in Toronto, Canada. Although most of his personal photographs now start out on film, he is an inherently digital photographer who owns two scanners and a really nice inkjet printer.

Inordinately proud of his camera collection, Matthew is a highly technical photographer. Specializing in product photography for jewellery and other small objects, he mostly uses a Nikon D700 and 85mm Perspective Control lens for commercial work. His personal photography may be done with a large and ever-changing collection of cameras, digital as well as film, ranging from the massive Fujifilm GX680III to a diminutive 35mm camera that's almost as old as he is. But whatever camera he chooses, his style is marked by strong geometry, shallow space, and an active frame.

Diversifying somewhat, Matthew also enjoys working with acrylic paint, where he prefers using palette knives to brushes. He almost exclusively uses only Mars Black and Titanium White, which is not surprising because his photographs are almost invariably in colour.
