I'm hardly the master of subtlety, so hopefully it's clear that my Three P's of Photography post is a send-up of the pervasive advice that can't tell the difference between cameras and photography.

A poet needs to know language, not how to type. As photographers we can benefit from having some technical knowledge, because cameras do think and see differently from how we do. But so many people confuse the process for the goal and devote themselves to the technical minutia. It's vastly more important to develop visual literacy, cultural awareness, and sensitivity to our environments. And of course it really helps to have something to say. But there are no Three Weird Tips for any of these things that really matter – it's so much easier to talk about gear while we plan for that next life-changing purchase.
