There's all kinds of potential in maps and guide books. At the Green Living Show this weekend I made a point of finding the Bruce Trail Conservancy so that I could join and buy one of their trail guides.

Last summer Penny and I had a great time exploring many of the city's ravines and waterfront parks, but getting away from the city core is a challenge without a car. So this year we've signed up for the Toronto Bruce Trail Club's introductory program for new hikers. Among other things, the Toronto club uses chartered buses to get to and from the trail – a dozen trips are on the schedule for May alone – which is a great chance to get out with a minimum of stress and hassle.

And, of course, there are maps.
