Living in the city we want to think that this is what Toronto is like. Vibrant, modern, worldly, energetic, full of contrasts, with a little plane overhead. And it can be all of those things. But this isn't really what Toronto looks like.

This is more like the reality.

The foreground has been lightened a bit in post, and I needed a flashlight to bring out the sign. But the sky really was that colour, that light. Every time I turned the camera toward the city I'd need to drop the exposure by six stops.

This is what light pollution looks like.

Toronto has so many lights, badly used and badly designed, excessive by intent and by accident. Of all of the many problems that the city won't spend the money to address this falls a very long way down the list, but it still deserves to be on it.
