The Toronto Island Ferries are usually the escape for summer trips to the beach, fully of excited children and picnickers. They're a novel experience in this city that's built on the edge of a lake, but they remain a part of the journey, not an experience in itself.

These photos are from three different trips to the islands during the summer of 2018. With exposure times ranging from a a few seconds to half a minute, the unpredictability of movement over water gives a new way to experience the journey. There's so much to see and hear. Instead of being an interstitial time of anticipation, a lull between departure and arrival, the ferry ride to and from the island has become the most intensive part of my time away from the city.
